I really enjoyed my time at Aston University. It was a great mixture of learning business and technical aspects of Information Technology. I also did a placement year where I worked as an IT Project Manager Officer for a financial company. Once I graduated from Aston back in 2009, I managed to join the graduate scheme at Logica and have been working here ever since. My current role is a Project Manager within a Space & Defence programme.
The best thing about your current role is….
When people ask me what I do for a living, I tell them that I can’t tell too much about my role but I am a project manager for a secure project. Then their imagination runs wild thinking I am James Bond or something...but I can assure you that I am not! But my role does involve meeting lots of interesting new people and I get to talk to people around Europe. But most importantly, I get to work from home most Fridays!
Most valuable skills…
Being a PM is a difficult role – you need to be aware of what is going on in a project at all times. So being pro-active is crucial, as well as good organisational and communication skills. I am quite an open person so my team are able to approach me when they need to discuss something to me and I get along with both the clients and sub-contractors...as long as the projects are going well!
My golden nugget of advice would be…
My advice for students is to definitely gain some kind of work experience related to your career – gone are the days where you are just dependant on solely having a degree! Students need to think about how they going to ‘stand out from the crowd’ and use what they have learnt at university and put it into practice. Therefore, a course with a industrial placement is very useful or alternatively, a summer internship will be a great thing to have on your CV.
Give us a quote!
I’ve never been good with quotes but I do recall one which goes “The surest way not to fail is to determine to succeed.” I like to think that I go with that attitude every time I wake up.
