Business - Business

Company Name: Thales

Location: UK

At Thales UK, success depends on the innovation, effort and commitment of our people. That’s why we recruit some of the best and brightest graduates from the UK’s top universities – we currently have over 350 graduates across all areas of the business enrolled on our four-year Graduate Development Programme. We endeavour to make sure that each and every one of them understands our wider company vision and strategic direction, and can act as our ambassadors.

As a significant defence and aerospace company, we operate in a sector that is a particularly good example of the UK’s expertise in high-tech manufacturing, as it represents more than 10% of the UK’s entire manufacturing industry. We employ around 4,000 engineers and technicians – 90% of whom are qualified to degree level or above – in high-value, high-quality manufacturing activity, or on R&D work for future business.

Globally, we devote almost 20% of our revenue to R&D, and each year we file hundreds of patents. In the UK, at our Reading-based research & technology site, we employ around 80 engineers, mathematicians and scientists who collaborate with various government agencies, universities and private organisations that invest in UK intellectual property. This is important as it supports the UK economy directly through our UK customer base and supply chains, and also indirectly by increasing the company’s export potential.

We have invested more than £3 billion in the UK over the past 10 years. Our new, high-tech facility in Crawley, which brings together 2,500 of our staff, is the biggest of our recent investments, part of a wider programme across the UK.
