Company Profile - NCIMB Ltd

Overview

NCIMB is a professional microbiology company. Since the 1940’s we have been building and managing what is now the largest industrial, marine and food culture collection in the UK. We have provided a comprehensive range of commercial microbiology services to diverse sectors within industry since 1983. Our services are all founded on our heritage of managing, understanding and exploiting bacteria for the commercial benefit of our customers. These services range from culture maintenance and preservation through microbiological and chemical identification and analysis, to the support of novel discovery research. We also pioneer cutting-edge multi-party microbiology R&D collaborations.

Who are we?

The "National Collection of Industrial Bacteria" was established by the UK Government in the 1950s as a depository for important non-medical bacteria, and was formed as a merger of the existing industrial and marine collections of the UK’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF). The collection continued to be part of the Scientific Civil Service for many years, moving to Scotland in 1959, and expanding to include marine, food and novel bacteria. In 1983 management of the collection was transferred to the University of Aberdeen, and the company NCIMB Ltd was created.

NCIMB has a track record of achievement, as recognised by the following standards and awards:

  • Compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) in the Identification Service
    BS EN ISO 9001:2000
    Investors In People standard
Member of CABRI (Common Access to Biological Resources and Information)
