British Council Language Assistants offers UK undergraduates and graduates posts as English Language Assistants in schools, colleges and universities in 15 countries worldwide for up to one full academic year.

Who are we?

For 106 years British Council Language Assistants has been sending UK undergraduates and graduates overseas to assist with the teaching of English and raising cultural awareness.

Currently sending 2500 assistants abroad a year, British Council Language Assistants, working with partner agencies abroad, spans four continents offering posts in 15 countries worldwide.

Career Opportunities

We offer placements in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Paraguay, Spain and Switzerland.

Language Assistants bring English alive for their students. You will improve their confidence in language and make classes more interactive and fun as well as being an Ambassador for UK culture.  You will work together with the class teacher and lead smaller groups of pupils. This will involve planning activities and games using photos, travel guides and maps from the UK as well as texts from newspapers, magazines and the internet. As a Language Assistant you will develop your teaching skills. The British Council has dedicated websites to support you with your role from lesson plans to classroom management for all ages. You will also receive training and induction on arrival in your host country.

Becoming a Language Assistant will stay with you for life. You will build your sense of independence by living and working abroad, improving your own language skills and cultural awareness whilst inspiring and motivating your students. You will return with skills and experiences that will hugely enhance your employability and make you stand out from the crowd in an increasingly competitive global job market.

What we look for

To be an English Language Assistant (ELA), you must:

  • Have a UK/EU passport (see website) 
  • Have completed your secondary education (11-18) and at least 2 years of higher education in the UK by the time you start your post
  • Be a native-level English speaker
  • Have the requisite language skills relevant for the country (see website)
