Talent hub aiming to improve graduate’s employment prospects

University leavers now have a chance to develop their prospects and full-time employment opportunities, thanks to an innovative new scheme.

Businesses looking to recruit new talent into their companies will sign up to the St Helens Chamber and will then be matched with graduates looking for employment.

Each graduate spends four weeks full-time at the Chamber undertaking initial training to fill gaps in their knowledge.

Local businesses are then asked to attend the hub’s Meet the Graduate Event in order to ensure there is a good match.

Once there is a good match, graduates spend six months working for the company whilst employed by the Hub – who deal with payroll and other HR issues.

The Chamber takes care of 50% of the graduate’s wages, whilst the local business is responsible for the other half.

Following a training programme at the chamber, one graduate has successfully completed their work experience at Zut media, and has now begun their placement with the company.

Mark Hancock, co-owner at Zut Media, said: “Our graduate has really hit the ground running. Their production-related degree has given him a good understanding of what we do as a business as well as providing him with some basic level skills that we can nurture.”

Employability skills training

All graduates who pass through the programme receive employability skills training including interview skills and CV preparation.

The training provided through the hub is designed to make graduates more attractive candidates for businesses willing to take them on.

Helen Walsh, Graduate Hub Programme Manager at St Helens Chamber, said: “We’ve created the Graduate Hub to help bridge the gap between university and the world of work. The programme aims to provide talented young graduates with the skills employers are looking for.”

A number of graduates are set to start the programme at the end of January, and the Chamber is on the lookout for companies who might have a vacancy available.
